Hospital Bag Checklist: What to Pack for You and Your Baby

Hospital Bag Checklist: What to Pack for You and Your Baby

Packing your hospital bag is one of those exciting milestones that makes everything feel a little more real. While every birth experience is different, having the essentials packed and ready can help you feel prepared for whatever the day brings.

Most parents aim to have their hospital bag packed by around 36 weeks, just in case your little one decides to make an early appearance.

Here's our simple hospital bag checklist.

For You

Focus on comfort and the things that will help you feel most at ease.

Pack:

  • Comfortable nightwear or button-up pyjamas
  • A lightweight dressing gown
  • Slippers or cosy socks
  • Maternity bras or nursing bras
  • Comfortable underwear
  • Maternity pads
  • Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, lip balm and hairbrush)
  • Hair ties
  • Phone and charger
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Healthy snacks
  • Going-home outfit
  • Any medication you regularly take

For Baby

Your baby won't need much, but having everything organised makes those first precious hours a little easier.

Pack:

  • 5–6 baby grows
  • 5–6 bodysuits
  • Socks or booties
  • Hat
  • Mittens (if preferred)
  • Muslin cloths
  • Newborn nappies
  • Baby wipes or cotton wool
  • Blanket for the journey home
  • Going-home outfit
  • Approved infant car seat, correctly fitted before you travel to the hospital

For Your Birth Partner

If someone is joining you for the birth, they may appreciate having a few essentials too.

Consider packing:

  • Phone charger
  • Snacks and drinks
  • Spare clothes
  • Toiletries
  • Cash or bank card for parking and refreshments

A Few Things You Can Leave at Home

It can be tempting to overpack, but many parents find they use far less than they expected.

You can usually leave behind:

  • Too many outfits for baby
  • Lots of toys or comforters
  • Full-size toiletries
  • Large amounts of makeup
  • Bulky pillows (unless they're something you know you'll want)

Keeping your bag simple makes it easier to find what you need when you need it.

Before You Leave

Before heading to the hospital, it's worth checking a few final things.

✔ Your hospital notes are packed.
✔ Your phone is fully charged.
✔ The car seat is safely fitted.
✔ Your hospital bag is easy to grab.
✔ You've got your keys, wallet and any important documents.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I pack my hospital bag?

Most parents have their hospital bag packed by around 36 weeks of pregnancy. Packing a little earlier can offer extra peace of mind.

How many baby clothes should I take to the hospital?

Around five or six baby grows and bodysuits are usually enough, although you may want to pack an extra outfit just in case.

Do hospitals provide nappies?

This varies between hospitals, so it's always worth packing your own newborn nappies and wipes or cotton wool.

What should I wear home from the hospital?

Choose something loose, soft and comfortable. Many parents opt for maternity leggings or joggers paired with a comfortable top or jumper. The most important thing to remember is that every birth is different, and it's completely normal if you don't use everything you've packed, or wish you'd brought something extra. Having the essentials ready means you can spend less time worrying about your bag and more time focusing on meeting your baby.
